Respect-paying service held for Vietnamese victim in Itaewon stampede

SEOUL — A service was held at Bucheon Hospital mortuary on Monday in memory of the Vietnamese citizen who died in a Halloween celebration stampede in Seoul two days ago.

The deceased’s body will be repatriated to be buried in the hometown of the victim, who was born in  二00 一. The service was conducted in a Buddhist fashion, as per the family's wish.

Minister Counsellor at the Vietnamese Embassy Nguyễn Việt Anh attended the service, while RoK Minister of Foreign Affairs Park Jin sent a wreath.

Earlier on Sunday, the foreign minister sent a letter to the Vietnamese Ambassador to the RoK Nguyễn Vũ Tùng, expressing his condolences over this incident and affirming that he will make every effort and work closely with the embassy in the matter.

The Korean Foreign Ministry also told the Vietnamese Embassy that its Government is exerting efforts to provide the necessary support for all victims of this tragedy.

The stampede, which broke out on the night of October  二 九, took the lives of  一 五 四 people and injured  一 三 三 others as of October  三0 night, as crowds were celebrating Halloween.

The Consular Department under the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has called on Vietnamese citizens who know more information about any other citizens that may be victims of the incident to notify the department for assistance.

Units of the MoFA and the Vietnamese Embassy in the RoK have set up a working group to continue keeping a close watch on the case and have taken various measures to protect citizens in case there are more Vietnamese victims.
